Foreign Language

Spanish 1 (Part 1)

Seventh grade 0.50 high school credits Core curriculum

Description

This is the first of two middle school Spanish courses using Breaking the Barrier Level 1. Completing both courses while in middle school will earn your student one high school foreign language credit.

Breaking the Barrier is a comprehensive language program for middle and high-school students. Unlike the Calico Spanish program which is targeted at young children, this program systematically explains grammar and uses written tests as well as oral exercises.

Each level is designed to be the equivalent of one year of high school Spanish. When using for middle school, they recommend completing one level over the course of two years. We suggest starting at the first level even if you have completed the Calico Spanish program, as it contains grammar study not included in Calico Spanish.

Breaking the Barrier offers a "homeschool package," containing books, tests, answer keys, and access to online lessons, which you may access at tobreak.com/pages/homeschool-spanish. Alternatively, students can complete the course using only the online content, as this contains all the vocabulary, grammar explanations, audio and video content used in the course, as well as typed exercises (but it does not include tests). You can access samples and purchase your preferred package here: tobreak.com/pages/high-school-spanish

Our curriculum schedules two Breaking the Barrier lessons per week by default. If you are able, we recommend having your student practice conversation with a native speaker one or two other days per week. You can schedule sessions with a native speaker via Homeschool Spanish Academy (which specializes in working with homeschool kids and follows an organized curriculum), or an online language tutoring platform like iTalki.
